Resolving to keep good habits

If you made any new year’s resolutions, the chances are you may already be struggling to stick to them. That’s no surprise. It’s really hard to maintain a new routine when our daily lives are so busy. Luckily, modern technology has come to our aid. These days, resolving to keep to some of our resolutions is much easier than it used to be.

Take tooth brushing for example. Resolving to keep our teeth clean and making sure we do is a good way to improve your overall health. We should brush our teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day for two minutes each time. Unfortunately, although resolving to brush for two minutes sounds quick, when you are brushing, it can feel so much longer than that. Toothbrush manufacturers understand the problem. Many electric toothbrushes now come with a built-in timer, making it easy to tell how long you need to brush for.

If you are still using a manual toothbrush, why not download one of your favourite songs to brush along to? You’ll find the time whizzes by. If you have a smartphone, download the Brush DJ app – some of my patients have found that one really helpful. You can read a case study about some of my younger patients who have transformed their brushing habits here.

Resolving the problem with brushing apps

Sticking with modern technology, there are loads of brushing apps – some of them free – that you can download to help you stick to your teeth cleaning resolutions. They’re not just for kids – why not give them a try and let me know how you get on?

Brushing your teeth well needs to be part of the everyday routine for every member of the family – once last thing at night and at one other time during the day.
